Rethinking Resolutions
Resolution: A firm decision to do or not do something.
Fact: By January 8th, 25% of resolutions fall by the wayside. By the years end fewer than 10% have been fully kept. (NY Times)
Hey! Happy New Year! Did you make any resolutions? Having just finished our first month how did it go? For the past 30 years I have made lists of: bad habits I wanted to quit, good habits I wanted to start, weight I needed to lose, foods I had to eat/give up, new things I needed to try, places I wanted to go... you name it. Some were realistic resolutions, some were not. At the beginning of January I would be filled with excitement and anticipation to absolutely CRUSH everything I had on my list. By March I had failed miserably, just like I failed all those previous years. With this information in mind I decided that I would change my approach to making resolutions. A few years ago I started to make monthly resolutions instead of yearly ones. That small change helped me be more successful.
I have heard/read that it takes 21 to 30 days to set or break a habit. So, with that in mind why not try to improve your chances of being successful by making some good habits and breaking some bad ones 30 days at a time?
For January 2018 I picked three goals. Number one was to drink more water. Number two was to get to the gym at least twice a week. Number three was to try not to interrupt others while they were talking. I am pleased to report I absolutely nailed TWO of them! Drinking more water was difficult at first but, I received the perfect Nalgene to drink from and carry it with me everywhere. I was able to affix a special sticker to it, one of my HUGE riding goals this year, which reminds me and motivates me to drink more water. Going to the gym was also a challenge. However, I nailed it and damn does it feel good! I am fortunate to have an incredible personal trainer, my son, who took me on as a client and doesn't have a problem pushing me to my potential and making me step out of my comfort zone. Thanks Trevor! As for the last one, stop interrupting.... I could have done better. I am able to catch myself now, bite my tongue and mostly let them finish. Since number three was not a complete success I am moving it into my February resolutions.
February goals: Number one, stop interrupting people until they finish their sentences. Number two, use my time more wisely. Number three, rest and recover appropriately from gym and biking efforts. Number four, keep eyes on my own plate. Can you guess which one will be the most difficult for me to achieve? Stay tuned, you will find out in less than a month.
