Nothing Grows In The Comfort Zone

"All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them".  -Walt Disney

Comfort zone:  A place or situation where one feels safe or at ease without stress.

I hate to admit this but I am completely ruled by my habits and my routines.  By having these habits and routines I have made my life very comfortable, very safe and easy. In fact, I have made it too comfortable.  One day this past January I had a thought... My life is cozy like a warm fuzzy blanket from the dryer, it's become too casual and too small.  As humans we are wired to be creatures of comfort, enjoy what feels good, settle in and relax. Once we get comfortable we tend to forget to try new things.  I have forgotten to try new things, especially those I am fearful of. That is why I want to step it up a notch, Hell, step it up two notches.  Keep in mind that what may be uncomfortable for me might not invoke the same feelings in you.  We are all different when it comes to "comfort zones" and "happy places".

I made a deal with myself after realizing that I will be 48 this year.  Growing older got me thinking...When was I going to really start living? Taking a few risks? (not bike related) Do things that scare me? Isn't part of living being out of your comfort zone?  Don't we grow when we do things that frighten us?  Does it make us less scared to try other things?

My plan is to do at least ONE thing that makes me very uncomfortable and completely step out of my comfort zone at least once a month.  These will be things that make my heart beat faster than normal, may frighten/scare me, make me sweat bullets, or perhaps make me hurl my breakfast. I can tell you that Ziplining and Dancing (a small class) are on the list.

I have already gotten a jump start on the year.  Below is a list of what I have accomplished so far.

January:

#1.  I put myself out there to be a Liv Ambassador for the Midwest. I was accepted! Here is a sneak peak to my profile.  There is so much to tell you about this position that it will need it's own blog. (working on it)

#2.   I had an idea come to fruition on January 28th, 2017.  Gravel for the Love of It was a fundraiser gravel ride that would help pay off school lunch accounts that were in the red.  Thirty five cyclists attended and donated over $1000.00 dollars!  A GoFund Me account netted nearly $750!  Final total will be announced this Friday, Feb.10th.  Thank you to all who donated!

February:
This month I have completed one "out of comfort zone" item and have at least one more planned.  On February 2nd I did a gravel talk to a full room at the Bike Stop Cafe.  I have spoken to smaller groups but have never been the one and only speaker.  Speaking to fill 1.5 hours was not really a challenge when talking about bikes and gravel, LOL  There was also the added element that I was being live streamed.... made me pretty nervous until I started talking and forgot about it.

The second item on my plate is.... my first plane ride alone. As part of the Liv Ambassador program I was invited to attend a Liv Cycling Camp in Malibu,California for 4 days.  While booking my flight I realized that I have never been anywhere alone, every flight has been with a spouse. I am looking forward to this trip and crossing this "uncomfortable item" off my list.

Can't wait to see what I do in March!
